It Is Two Drugs, Not One
In Canada, the abortion pill goes by the brand name Mifegymiso. The package holds two different drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, and you take them at separate times.
Mifepristone comes first. It blocks progesterone, the hormone a pregnancy needs to continue, which causes the uterine lining to shed and the pregnancy to detach.
Misoprostol follows 24 to 48 hours later. This second drug makes the uterus contract and expel the pregnancy.
What Your Body Does During the Process
Abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding happen every time. These are not side effects that some women get, and others avoid. They are how the medication works, though the intensity varies from person to person.
Bleeding usually runs heavier than a period, and you might pass large clots up to the size of a lemon. Many women also report nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, fever, headache, or dizziness.
Timing Decides Whether This Option Applies to You
Health Canada does not approve Mifegymiso beyond 63 days, or 9 weeks, from the first day of your last period. Cycles shift, periods get missed, and a lot of women turn out to be further along than they guessed.
