Your friends have told you what they think you should do. You are not sure yet, and that is a hard spot to be in.
Not knowing yet is not the same as being confused. You can talk this through with someone who is not part of your friend group. Book a no-cost, confidential appointment at The Cherish Women’s Resource Centre in Chilliwack.
Why Your Friends Are Pushing
People often give advice based on their own lives. A friend who had an abortion may want you to make the same choice she did. A friend who knows money is tight for you may think she is doing you a favour.
Some of them are worried about you. Some are worried about themselves, like a boyfriend who isn’t sure he wants to be a dad or a roommate who assumes you will move out.
That does not make them bad friends, but it doesn’t make them right either.
“I’m Not Ready” Is a Fine Answer
You do not have to decide on anyone else’s schedule. An abortion requires your consent, so no friend, boyfriend, or parent can agree to it for you.
If you feel pushed toward something you do not want, tell someone outside the situation. It helps to talk to a person who has nothing to gain either way.
What You Can Do This Week
This week, the first thing you can do is confirm your pregnancy. Our centre offers no-cost pregnancy testing in a confidential setting.
Next, get real information about your options. Options counseling covers abortion, adoption, and parenting, and asking about one does not mean you have picked it.
You also do not have to cover everything in one visit. You can ask a couple of questions and go home to think about it.
The Choice Is Still Yours
Your friends will still have opinions next week, but they do not get to make this decision for you.
You can come in, take a no-cost pregnancy test, ask whatever you want, and leave feeling more informed and confident than when you walked in.
