Someone wondering if she can get pregnant even though she's had an abortion

After an abortion, it’s natural to have questions about your body and what comes next. You may be wondering how soon fertility returns, whether your ability to get pregnant again could be affected, or what steps you can take to protect your health moving forward. These are thoughtful, valid concerns, and you’re not alone in asking them.

At Cherish Women’s Resource Centre, we’re here to offer clear information in a compassionate, supportive space where your questions are welcomed. Schedule an appointment today to learn more.

How Fertility Can Return

The body’s reproductive cycle often begins to adjust soon after a pregnancy ends.

  • Ovulation may happen sooner than expected: After pregnancy hormones drop, ovulation may occur within a few weeks. Because of this, it’s possible to become pregnant again before your menstrual cycle feels fully “back to normal.”
  • Planning ahead can bring peace of mind: If avoiding another pregnancy is important to you right now, learning more about your body can help you feel more prepared and in control.

What This Means for Future Fertility

It’s common to worry about whether an abortion could affect your ability to have children later. The good news is that, in most cases, women are able to conceive again after an abortion.

Still, taking care of your body matters, and follow-up care helps ensure everything is healing as it should. Rare complications can include:

  • Infection: When treated early, infections are usually manageable. If left untreated, infection can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which can cause scarring on the fallopian tubes.
  • Uterine Scarring: In very rare cases, scar tissue (Asherman Syndrome) can form inside the uterus, though this is often associated with complicated or repeated procedures.

Understanding Important Health Screenings

Before making decisions about a pregnancy, or if you’re concerned about a previous one, having accurate information can provide reassurance.

  • Ectopic Pregnancy: An ultrasound can confirm that a pregnancy is developing in the uterus, helping rule out ectopic pregnancy, which requires immediate care from a healthcare professional. If undetected, rupture can occur, potentially leading to the loss of a fallopian tube and life-threatening internal bleeding.
  • Rh Factor: The Rh factor is a protein on your red blood cells. If you’re Rh-negative and your blood mixes with Rh-positive blood, your body can make antibodies that could cause complications for a future baby. To prevent this, a healthcare provider may recommend a RhoGAM shot after an abortion, especially after 12 weeks, which helps protect any future Rh-positive pregnancies.
