If you’re struggling emotionally after an abortion, you may be wondering why it still affects you. Maybe it happened recently. Maybe it was years ago. You might feel depression, anxiety, regret, shame, or a mix of emotions that catch you off guard. However you’re feeling, it matters. You are not alone, and help is available.

At The Cherish Women’s Resource Centre, we offer confidential, no-cost support for women and men who want to take a step toward healing. Our Post-Abortive Recovery (PAR) support program is available for women who want help processing what they’ve experienced.

You do not have to carry this silently. We’re here to listen. Reach out today and book a confidential appointment.

Why Emotions Can Surface Later

For many women, the emotional impact of abortion does not show up immediately. You may have focused on getting through the situation, finishing school, maintaining relationships, or returning to routine. When life slows down, unresolved feelings sometimes rise to the surface.

You might notice unexpected grief, irritability, difficulty sleeping, or feeling disconnected in relationships. Anniversaries or significant life milestones can also bring memories back into focus.

These reactions are not uncommon. They are often signs that something inside you still needs attention and care.

Healthy Ways to Begin Processing

Healing often begins with giving yourself permission to acknowledge what you feel instead of pushing it aside.

Some women find it helpful to talk with someone they trust who can listen without minimizing their experience. Others start privately by writing their thoughts down. Putting emotions into words, whether spoken or written, can make them feel less overwhelming and easier to understand.

If you are unsure where to begin, a simple question like, “What am I still carrying?” can open the door to reflection.

You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone

The Cherish Women’s Resource Centre offers post-abortive recovery support in a confidential setting, available one-on-one or in a small group format. This is not about being judged or pressured. It is about having a safe space to process your experience, ask honest questions, and take a step toward peace.

If you need additional support beyond what we offer, we can help you explore other resources in your community.

Healing is possible. No matter how long ago your abortion happened, support is available.
