Telling your parents about your pregnancy can be a conversation that you have been dreading. We understand, and we’re here to offer some simple tips to help you open up to the conversation.

No matter how your parents respond, know that you are not alone in your pregnancy situation. Our team is here to walk alongside you.

Prepping for the Conversation

Preparation is key to having a good conversation with your parents about your unexpected pregnancy. Here are some ways you might mentally prepare before diving in:

  • Process the pregnancy news yourself (journal, self-care, & time alone)
  • Talk to a friend beforehand (if needed) to process your emotions
  • Bring someone with you to the discussion with your parents
  • Go in knowing you have the final say about your pregnancy decision

Pick a Convenient Time

Timing is key when having a difficult situation, such as an unexpected pregnancy. Pick a convenient time that makes sense for your parents, either a weekend or a day that your parents are off work. Try only having one conversation instead of splitting up your parents for two separate conversations so it’s less taxing on you emotionally.

Talk in a private place like their home so everyone feels comfortable and there are no distractions. You could share the news at your parent’s home so you can leave if the conversation becomes too much.

Be Open & Listen

Try being open while hearing your parents out. Listen instead of interrupting them while they try to process your news.

You may or may not be surprised by your parents’ response. Let them process the news and answer any questions they have.
