How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
A pregnancy test determines if you’re pregnant by measuring how much hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is in your body. There are two types of pregnancy tests: a urine or blood pregnancy test. Urine pregnancy tests are more common and much easier to take.
Home pregnancy tests are 99% accurate if done correctly, but we recommend confirming the results with lab-quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound to be sure.
When Should I Take a Test?
You may want to take a pregnancy test right away to get answers. However, try to wait until the day after your first missed period to take a test so you can receive the most accurate result.
Are Your Periods Irregular?
If your periods are typically irregular, it can be tricky to know when to take a pregnancy test. Most pregnancy tests can detect hCG in urine 12-15 days after ovulation for women with 28-day cycles. Try waiting at least two weeks after sex for an accurate pregnancy test reading.
