How Does An Ultrasound Work?
An ultrasound is a scan that uses sound waves to create a picture of your internal structures. During an ultrasound scan, high-frequency sound waves reveal images of your uterus and pregnancy. The ultrasound tech uses a gel to reduce static between your skin and the transducer (the sensing device) to get a clear picture.
The first ultrasound is usually done during the first trimester to confirm the pregnancy. Once you have done that and if you decide to continue your pregnancy, a second ultrasound is generally done in the second trimester if no possible complications occur. You will have more ultrasounds as your pregnancy develops. If there are potential complications, additional ultrasounds will also be needed.
