Abortion prompts different reactions in every woman. From relief to sadness to regret, these feelings may last a short time or linger for months or years afterward.
While the procedure doesn’t always cause mental health effects in women, understanding the possible effects and considering your own mental health can help you make a pregnancy decision (or, if you’ve had an abortion, access appropriate support).

What Research Says
Studies show that “at least some women do have significant mental health issues that are caused, triggered, aggravated, or complicated by their abortion experience.” Possible mental health effects could include “sadness, grief, and feelings of loss” or disorders like depression and anxiety.
It is also critical to note that certain risk factors can make women more likely to experience these effects, including:
- Feeling pressured by others to have an abortion
- A prior history of mental health issues
- Lack of social support
- A history of previous abortion.
Cultural and religious views on abortion can also play a role in how someone feels after an abortion. If you are considering abortion, speaking with your healthcare provider and reviewing any current mental health concerns can provide insight as you make a decision.
As you consider how you might feel and weigh your options, remember that support is available. You don’t have to navigate this process alone.
