Emotional Responses Can Be Complex
After an abortion, women may experience a wide range of emotions. While some initially feel relief, others notice more difficult feelings develop over time.
Additionally, abortion can result in varied mental health challenges for women. A study conducted in Quebec found that women who had an abortion were more than twice as likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric issues than women who continued their pregnancies.
What’s more, abortion has been associated with an increased risk of being admitted for the following:
- Psychiatric disorders (i.e., depression)
- Substance use disorders
- Suicide attempts
What Can Influence Mental Health After Abortion
Not every woman will face emotional complications, but certain factors can increase the likelihood of challenges. For example, research has found that factors like being under the age of 25 or having preexisting mental health disorders can increase the risk of hospitalization.
Recognizing these influences allows you to be proactive about your mental and emotional health and seek support when needed.
