What Is Abortion?
Abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. The type of procedure available to you depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy, along with other health considerations.
Medical abortion involves taking medications to end the pregnancy. The first medication, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed to sustain a pregnancy. The second medication, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.
Surgical abortion uses instruments, suction, or a combination of both to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. This procedure is typically done in a clinic or hospital setting. The further along in the pregnancy, the more complex the procedure may be.
What Are the Possible Risks?
It’s important to be aware of the potential health risks, though not everyone will experience them. Understanding these risks can help you make a thoughtful, informed decision.
Possible risks of medical abortion include:
- Cramping and abdominal pain
- Nausea or diarrhoea
- Fever or chills
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Incomplete abortion (when some pregnancy tissue remains, requiring surgical follow-up)
Health authorities generally recommend that medical abortion be performed only up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Possible risks of surgical abortion include:
- Infection
- Damage to the uterus or cervix
- Excessive bleeding
- Scar tissue formation in the uterus (which may affect future fertility or cause painful periods)
Your health and well-being matter. That’s why we encourage you to gather all the facts and connect with our team to learn more about your pregnancy options.
